Seven Birel drivers score wins at final round of WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series
THREE OAKS, MI (September 21, 2010) – Standing on the back of seven victories at the hands of seven different drivers, it was Birel that secured a third-straight WKA Constructor’s Title at the final round of the World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer’s Cup at New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP).
The only “true” Constructor’s Championship award which includes all classes including junior, senior and junior sportsman categories, the WKA Constructor’s Title has been a sought after prize for chassis manufacturer’s for many years, offering a “complete” representation of grassroots karting.
“We are just ecstatic to have so many teams and drivers involved in claiming this year’s title,” said Garry Lobaugh, MRP Motorsport President, importer for Birel racing chassis. “While other teams relied on a couple of drivers scoring multiple wins in the same categories each event, we can honestly say that every category that a Birel was entered was well represented, from Cadet to Masters.”
The weekend started off with a podium sweep of the Cadet 1 Final led by Austin Osborne (MKP-Birel). Tristan VanWeiringen (Birel America) and Gresham Wagner (Birel America) finished 2nd and 3rd while Collin Campbell (MKP-Birel) placed 5th.
The very next race, Marc Miller (Birel America) completed a sweep of the Yamaha Masters class by scoring the pole, heat, fast time and final win followed by Steve Schiewner (MKP-Birel).
Grant Quinlin (Birel America) scored a popular win in Yamaha Sportsman Heavy to give Birel their third win of the day.
In the Komet Heavy Final though, Patrick Olsen led Ryan Stewart and Cole Nelson across the line to give Birel their second podium sweep of the day.
VanWeiringen then took the fifth win for Birel of Saturday, leading Mike McAndrews (Birel America) to a 1-2 finish in the Komet Jr. Sportsman final.
On Sunday, Cole Nelson started the day well by taking the pole and final victory in Yamaha Supercan Heavy with teammate, Ryan Stewart coming home in 3rd.
In the next race, Birel scored their third podium sweep of the weekend with Gresham Wagner (Birel America) leading Quinlin and Osborne across the line in the Cadet final. VanWeiringen would finish 5th.
“This was a great way to cap off the season,” said Chris Lobaugh, Birel America engineer. “Scoring seven wins with seven different drivers, three podium sweeps and two more 1-2 finishes and 28 podiums is a great accomplishment. We look forward to building on this momentum as we plan for Daytona and the 2011 season.”
