Hi, I've got a '03 Birel CR31 that I am almost ready to get on the track this weekend but my front brakes keep leaking (without use). They are the new style Freeline front brakes. After bleeding them they appear fine although the bleeding tool would probably yield more firm results. But then a few days later I notice wetness under the line-to-caliper fittings (both sides). The previous owner must have had the same problem becuase there is plumbers tape around the threads, and now the tape is wet! Any recommendations on what should be done to seal it up? Thanks.

In most cases on a new kart like that the fittings need to be checked for tightness. It is possible the fittings are cracked. It has happened in the past that the fittings were not tightened fully at the factory. But those are my obvious choices with the experience we have had.

I will drain the fluid out of the calipers and remove the fittings to inspect them. Do you know if these cracks are usually visible to the eye?

Hello Micah!

To answer your last question - Yes, you should be able to see a crack - but you need to look at the brake line fitting. Most of the time it is the fitting that is cracked from cross-threading or over tightening.

The "plumbers tape" you seen, is used as a sealant - and you should use it if you remove the fitting.

Also, if you drain the brake fluid - make sure you do not use a brake fluid that contains silicone - We use a off the shelf dot 3 in ours with great results.

I also noticed from your post that your not using a brake bleeding tool? It can be done without one, but I strongly suggest you purchase one - It's a small price to pay for getting the job done the first time and back on the track.
Check with your local dealer and if you can’t find one - I'm sure one of the dealers here on the forum can help you out - BTW... did I mention I was a dealer? :-)

Hope this helps..

I agree with Sam it is very easy to over tighten the brake lines so be carefull. But if they are leaking at the fitting chances are the fitting is cracked.Sometimes thighter is not better. It might be time for a front brake line replacement.
