View Full Version : Question Regarding New Freeline Intake Silencer

Hello,
I had a question regarding the new style "suction" Freeline intake silencer. Once the adapter boot is installed in the silencer, is the intention to trim off the portion of the boot protruding to the inside of the silencer? I just want to verify that this is what is supposed to be done before cutting it off (also I don't want to get bounced in tech for modifying the boot if it is not supposed to be done).
Thank You,
Brian O'Hara

This is a very excellent observation Brian and one which caused problems for many at Stars a few races ago.
International racers had to beg their case to the US tech officials as to the intent of the manufacture on this item. It is the intent of the producer of this item to give the user a choice as to angled vs. straight. The unused portion of the air box boot (that sticking inside) is to be cut in the view of the engineers. It all depends on which tech inspector you are dealing with as to how this will sort out. This is a question I will pose directly with the US leading officials as to their current interpretation, but it is my belief that they have concluded that the air box boot may be trimmed but not re-configured.

This is as official as it gets. Scott Evans of Stars is considered one of the best in the tech world and he has provided his well tuned answer below:

Dear Garry -
Your interpretation is correct but not quite complete as it regards the Stars rules. I was very specific with the update that dealt with this after RoA 2005 and incorporated those words directly into the body of the rulebook in 2006.
I make no inferrance regarding the way the rest of the world views this issue...
From paragraph 2.02.19:
§ All Freeline silencers: Freeline airboxes come with a rubber boot that can be used in two separate orientations. There is a carb coupler diameter on both ends. Once desired silencer position is determined on the boot, the entire unused carb coupler, now internal to the silencer, may be trimmed back to the extent of that coupler’s diameter. Smoothing or blending of trimmed surface is permitted provided no change occurs to the remaining inside diameter of the boot. Maximum corner break on inside diameter is 1.5mm.
