What is the last year that this chassis came with the bread box style side pods?

Tom,
We ran a couple of new ones this year ( got in June 04). At Stockholm Karting Center, Mn we finished 1st in TAG, 1st in Superbox Med ( my son Chris ) and 5th in Superbox Heavy ( that was my tired old, fat butt! ) The chassis worked great and was ( to my understanding ) a little easier to 'free up' than the new bodywork. Good luck Mark @Riverlake Racing, Minneapolis

The last year the CQ31Z came with the old style bodywork to my knowledge is 2003. Even though that is the last year the karts came like that, the old style bodywork will still work with the new karts, it just uses a different side bar.

I have looked at 2 used cq31zs that the owners said were 2003s and they had the old style pods, that is why I asked. I was under the impression that 2003 had the newer style.

A 2003 kart could mean and in this case did mean they were new! C means 10 degree front ends. Q means the style of the frame from a geometric view ( take a look at the difference of the R, vs the M vs the Q on the web site) each has it's time of year and application. The Z in this case meant when it first was produced and NOT when it was produced. In other words the Z model could have been produced in 2002 or 2003.

2004 pods require a 90 degree bar out from the frame rails. The 2003 and earlier karts have a 90 degree at the rear position and a 45 degree off the front. This requires the rectangular ( lighter) pod assembly and front hoop than the 2004 model plastics and hardware. (8-13 lbs) We have customers that due to weight require the intermediate kit ( hope I don't confuse anyone here) which is a set of pod bars that will go into the 90 degree straight out but accept the rectangular pods, which all is sill less weight than the 04 style body work and pods. ( the current Easy Kart is an example of the intermediate style)

The intermediate came about because of the confusion at the time(early in the homologaton pod change over) with America not accepting the CIK new body work by some sanctioning bodies. So what do you wish for, looks or speed?

Well if you are borderline on the weight, then you will automatically go for the intermediate or old style. THE Q31Z HAS BEEN THE VERY BEST KART FOR MULTIPLE applications 80 CC,(Kyle Rahal national champion, many Rotax wins, Tim Lobaugh first National champion) ROTAX AND 2 CYCLE APPLICATIONS, and we have ton of those karts in the system.(maybe 250 of this style) The current Q31 (without the C means 12 degree spindles which will not accept front brakes) remember CQ always means 10 degree and capable of front brakes, is known as SP and is a hot item for spring and fall conditions or no grip track set ups such as Infenion and the desert. Mexico is also a country that does well with this kart due to the lack of grip.

I hope this is not informaton overload, but this is as much information as we can offer and so long as the chassis is straight, you should have really good luck with the item. Any other questions? Thanks for using the forum. I don't think anyone who might be offering these karts is trying to mis-represent the age, but if in doubt ask your local dealer. Do you need parts, then call one of our 40 local dealers in the U>S>.
