With cold weather and the threat of rain throughout the day, it was hard to tell how many drivers would show up for the first annual Rock Kart Spring Sprints. But early Saturday morning drivers started to roll in one after another making it clear that not even cold weather and the threat of rain would stop drivers from enjoying a day of action packed racing at Michiana Raceway Park.

After all the drivers received the proper safety equipment, each driver went to get weighed to ensure racing would be close in both the heavy and light class. With over 50 drivers racing was sure to be action packed.

Following a drivers meeting, practice sessions began with cold tires and a cold track. Once everyone was comfortable with the karts and track, qualifying sessions began with two sessions for the lights and two sessions for the heavy class. At that point, even with cloudy skies and cold weather, the on track excitement was putting a smile on everyone’s face.

The heat races produced some hard fought battles in both classes and saw many great drives, qualifying some for the finals and others for the last chance qualifier. In both last chance qualifiers there were heated battles for the final few transfer spots to the Spring Sprints final and a chance to be named Rock Kart Spring Sprints champion.

After the LCQ, the fields were set for the Rock Kart Spring Sprints Finals. The heavy class had a barn burner of a battle for the final podium spot with the 1st and 2nd place karts comfortably cruising to their respective podium positions. In the lights, there was a intense battle for both the win and the final podium spot the entire race and once the dust settled another champion was crowned holding off a strong charge from 2nd place.

Two champions later and numerous smiling faces confirmed that the first annual Rock Kart Spring Sprints was a huge success and should be a great sign for the year of Rock Kart racing to come. With each champion securing a spot in this year’s second annual Rock Kart World Finals, the rest of the drivers will have to fight their way in by racing in Rock Kart leagues throughout the summer
