Baseline set-ups for Birel R30

Could we get a baseline on the R30 with the 40mm axle? Also, what was the feedback on the 50mm testing? And what is the suggested baseline for that combination now?

Asking in reference to an R30 with a Yamaha Can package.

Same here, 40mm axle, any suggestions for using YDS tires also would be appreciated.

If you are talking RY30S1 with a 40mm axle and 6.0 YHC's I would start with 1040x3 F axle down, middle bearing tight, 100mm hubs set at 23 cm from the cassette to the end of the hub, side rail out, front bar in, spindles in the stock position with .5 degree caster out, 17mm spindles with 75 mm hubs set at 2 thick spacers wide.

RX30SE with a 40mm axle and 6.0 YHC's: 1040x3 F axle down, middle bearing tight, 100mm hubs set at 23 cm from the cassette to the end of the hub, side rail out, short front bar in, spindles in the stock position with 1.0 caster out, 17mm spindles with 75mm hubs set at 2 thick spacers wide.

R30CY with a 40mm axle and 6.0 YHC's: 1040x3 F axle, middle bearing tight, 100mm hubs set at 23 cm from the cassette to the end of the hub, front bar in, spindles in the middle, central pills, 17mm spindles with 75mm hubs set at 2 thick and one thin spacer wide.

50mm vs 40mm axle tests...we have yet to put a 40mm axle in the RY30S1 because we haven't felt the need to do so. The kart works great right out of the box. We have tested both 40 and 50mm axles in the RX30SE and the R30CY and prefer the 50mm axle.

When WKA first allowed the 50mm axle in competition we were skeptical if the average Jr. driver would be able to make the 50mm axle work. We compared the 40 to the 50 in many different conditions with multiple drivers and have found the 50 to be better EXCEPT when there is no rubber on the track. When there is no rubber on the track the 50mm axle seems to be a little too stiff and makes the rear of the kart slide whereas the 40mm axle is much softer and it allows the kart to "work" better. With the 50 mm axle this can be overcome by raising the rear of the kart, pulling the seat stays, removing the front bar and removing caster until the track starts to build a bit of rubber on it. Once the track comes around you can start moving towards the baseline set up again. Hope this helps.

I thought that I already gave you a base line for YDS tires and you were in the midst of testing some of the suggestions? Let me know what has and hasn't worked for you and we will go from there...

The thing is we are running the 4.5's on the front and rear, since the YDS in the larger rear size won't get enough heat in 8 laps races. I have been running a rear width of 48.5, 1040 "F" axle, since any wider than that the rear gets loose on the high speed exits, Med rear hubs, any narrower it gets very twitchy down the long straights. Front bar in, 2.5 spacers to the inside. 3rd bearing tight. 11/82 gear, outside temp 60-65 degrees. The kart does not seem to want to turn in at corner entry, and is still loose at the rear on the low speed corner exits. Camber set at 0, 2 degrees toe out. Do you think tipping the back of the seat more forward (upright)might help? We also have 6lbs up high on the back left of the seat, and 2- 4lb weights on the front of the seat. Or you can just tell me that the driver has to go slower into the entry of the corners :) Thanks for all your help.

R30CY w/ 50mm Axle
1040x50x2-F, middle bearing tight, 100mm hubs at 54 1/2" wide, one seat stay each side, front bar in, spindles in the middle, 75mm front hubs set two thick and one thin spacer wide, 2mm toe out, camber will be between 0 and 2mm positive. Freeline seat mounted at 60cm from the front rail to the front edge of the seat, top of the axle to the top of the back of the seat 22cm, bottom of the seat should be 3-5mm below the frame rails.

Already thinking about next year when we run our Z30 (40mm axle) in Junior Supercan. Here's some of our questions...

-- Do I need to adjust for a Vega Blue 6.5" rear tire (instead of the 6.0 YKCs)?

-- Would running a Douglas spun aluminum wheel rather than the stock magnesium wheels make a difference?

-- We normally run 2mm toe out and 0-degree castor/camber via adjustable pills (not factory). Still okay?

-- I normally don't run a middle bearing in junior and senior can classes (other chassis). Should I and why with the Z30?

-- Seat struts in, right? One or two?
