Daniel Formal and Taylor Tzouanakis both recorded strong finishes in Rotax Jr. utilizing an RY30S1 at the 2nd round of the Florida Winter Tour in Homestead last weekend. Daniel qualified second both days. In the first prefinal he clipped a curb hard enough to throw the chain off the sprocket and was forced to start the Main in 26th. At the end of the first lap Daniel was 4.8 seconds behind the leader. By the end of the 25 lap final Daniel was up to second, set the fastest lap of the race, and finished just over 2 seconds behind the leader. Unfortunately he was given a 10 second penalty for touching a cone that another driver had previously hit and moved out of position (the other driver was not penalized for hitting the cone). Taylor also was forced to start the Main from the back of the grid after a DNF due to a crash on the opening lap and drove up to 12th from 33rd.

On the second day Daniel and Taylor both had much better luck in the pre-final and ended up finishing second and 11th respectively. In the Final Danny got shuffled back to 9th on the start which allowed Rios Jr. to pull out to a 3 second lead. Halfway through the Final Daniel was back up to 3rd where he stayed for most of the race. He got into a battle with Nick Neri and Jaimie Ortega for the last 5 laps. On the last lap Danny made a pass in the first hairpin to go back into 3rd, but, didn't cover his line very well and Neri went back around in the second hairpin taking Ortega with him. Formal crossed the line in 5th but was given another 10 second penalty for supposedly hitting a cone. Taylor drove an excellent race to 7th position recording his highest finish at a FWT event.

Danny was using a 1040 M axle up, no middle bearing, 90mm Magnesium hubs at 54 1/2" wide, magnesium cassettes, 620x150 rear bumper, crash bar loose, the seat at 61, 62, and 21.5 with the bottom of the seat 5mm below the frame rails. One seat stay each side, standard front bar, 25mm spindles in the standard position, 75mm hubs with two thick and one thin spacer wide, central pills top and bottom, and 2.5mm toe out. Most of what we were doing with Danny revolved around taking as much weight off the chassis as possible since he crosses the scale at 338 lbs. with no lead on the kart.

Taylor used a 1040 M axle up, no middle bearing, 100mm Freeline hubs at 54 1/2", standard cassettes, 620x150 rear bumper with the crash bar loose, seat at 62, 62.5, and 22 with the bottom of the seat flush with the bottom of the frame rails. 2 seat stays each side, standard front bar, 17mm spindles in the standard position, 75mm hubs with two thick and one thin spacer wide, .5 caster in, and 2mm toe out.

In retrospect on Sunday we were probably a bit high on the tire pressure for the final and we either needed to go forward with the seat a bit more or try an F axle again.

Wes Phillips and Daniel Formal will be running next weekends Tag Senior category and they will both be utilizing the RY30S1 chassis.
