New to this-need advice

Hi guys, I noticed that you have some good information in your website and I wonder if you can help out with out opinion.

I am looking to get into shifter kart racing. I have been racing those arrive and drive karts for a couple of years now, joined a race leaque, did some autocross with my car etc.

I live down in South Florida, my budget to get started is about $5,000. From the karts I found, I have a cou-le of options, to buy a 2009 Tonykart Krypton with a TM ICC engine (needs rebuild- has 20 gallons on it) for $6000. Basically I will have to rebuild it and along with the rest of the accesories I have to buy (suit helmet shoes etc) its going to come to about $7000 or more. Or, but used First kart don't remember the year 2004 or 2007 with the 125cc leoprd engine from a local dealer who is selling if for one of his customers for $3000. He told me that the Leopard engine is as powerfull as the TM ICC, is that true? Also is that older First Kart going to be competitive or its a bad choice?

Also, do you guys have any used karts around my price?

I would suggest you go watch a couple races at your local track before you buy either kart. See what is being run at your local track and talk to some of the locals because it won't be any fun if you show up for a race and you are the only ICC or Leopard at the track.

Rotax and Easy kart are pretty big in South Florida. For the kind of money you are talking you could buy a new Easy kart, or find a decent used Rotax. Personally I would recommend Rotax - quality motors, it's the largest kart class in the country, and my primary reason is it's a drivers class. I will warn you though, South Florida has a pretty competitive series so you will be racing against some good drivers.

Hi Carl,

thanks for the recommendation. How come the Rotax is a drivers class? I thought that having to change gears as well would be even more challenging! Is it because of the increased participation?

I will be mostly going to Homestead and maybe in Moroso, those are the 2 most popular local tracks down here. The guy who is selling me the TonyKart has be racing at both of them so I assumed that there is a leaque of some sort. I will go down there probably this Saturday to see what's going on.

The Rotax provides a level playing field with an engine warranty. The motor is built to the highest level of performance and perfection of any engine on the market. A sealed spec motor make the Rotax concept high in resale value and a true drivers class. I would suggest a first time kart buyer look at the 125 self start program rather than the six speed shifting market. It is just too brutal for most customers to drive a shifter.
