Given a choice, as a general rule of thumb, is there any reason not to go with the largest drive sprocket feasible as opposed to the same ratio using a smaller drive sprocket ? I have always been under the impression that the larger gear consumes less HP. I know it probably wouldn't be a major difference, but even if it helps w chain wear , I would go that way. Just wondering what your thoughts might be.

The difference you would see is so miniscule, that you are better off spending the efforts on making sure your motor is square with the gear and the distance from the motor and gear is optimal (too short and too easy to tighten the chain, too far and you lose hp through chain slap).

Theoretically, you are correct.... but if you are using a yamaha, a 10T seems to not have bind issues - at least not enough to make 12T drivers and special order rear gears to make it suitable.

How do I determine the ideal chain length for an HPV-2 (10T) on an AM 29?
